Like Family Physicians, an internist tends to be one of the first professionals when a patient seeks medical care. The difference between the two is that Internists specialize in diagnosing and treating afflictions such as heart disease, cancer, or other specialties. These primary-care doctors treat illnesses, commonly only in adults. Patients are likely to visit them or their family doctor first for any condition.
